Obituary
Herbert L. Kreindler
On April 25, 2026 Herbert Lewis Kreindler died in Burlington, Vermont. He was 91. Herb was born in Manhattan to David Kreindler and Anne Levin Kreindler, but was raised in Liberty, NY where he loved all things that could be done outdoors in the Catskills. The Grossinger Hotel provided the center for his childhood where he swam, caught frogs and turtles, learned to play golf, skied and was on the speed skating team with his siblings. He was proud of the medals he earned competing all over the state of New York, especially at the Silver Skates at Madison Square Garden. During his time as a student at Liberty High School, the course of his life changed forever when Barbara Baker moved to town and they became inseparable. Just over 69 years ago, as he neared graduation from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) with an engineering degree, he and Barbara became Herb and Bobbie Kreindler in a fabulous wedding at the Grossinger Hotel.
Herb and Bobbie spent almost all of their married life in Dix Hills and Melville on Long Island where he first worked as an engineer. Herb would proudly state that he was a risk taker. One of his most successful risks was when he retired from his engineering career in his early 40s, while he still had three children to put through college, to turn his passion for ancient coins into his full time career as a numismatist. Through this career he built lasting
relationships with partners and clients all over the world. He relished the hunt, the risk, the research, and every part of this career from which he never fully retired. He loved all the overseas travel related to this business. He and Bobbie also loved to travel for fun, especially taking trips with many of their cherished friends. The family count shows at least 56 countries that they have explored.
Although Herb didn’t live to have one more golf season, he enjoyed this past winter in Vermont where he and Bobbie spent a lot of time with their family and he enjoyed meeting new people. Even in the hospital, he engaged all the staff in interesting conversations.
Herb is survived by his wife of more than 69 years, Bobbie, to whom he was entirely devoted, and their three children Ann Kreindler-Siegel and partner Gary Oberlender of Charlotte, NC, Steven Kreindler and spouse Laura Caffry of Waitsfield, VT and Jeffrey Kreindler and spouse Michelle Kreindler of Milton, VT.
Herb is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren: Melissa Siegel Barrios and spouse Elver Barrios and their children Xitlali, Luna and Nova, Daria Siegel and partner Walker Petersen, Charlotte Caffry McCubrey and spouse John McCubrey, Walker Caffry Randall and partner Sophie Levine, Brett Kreindler and Amanda Kreindler.
Herb is further survived by his brother Peter Kreindler and spouse Alice Kreindler, his sister-in-law Ellie Baker Feldman and many nieces and nephews and cousins in the Kreindler, Stongin, and Baker families.
Herb was predeceased by his parents, his sister Patrica Kreindler Strongin and her spouse Seymour Strongin, and his great nephew Henry Strongin Goldberg.
Services will be at Temple Beth El of Huntington at Noon on Thursday, April 30, 2026, followed by a burial service at the New Montefiore Cemetery. The family is receiving guests following the burial service at Temple Beth El of Huntington.
