Steven Mark Mars, Brooklyn born on November 26, 1960, peacefully passed away on August 17th surrounded by his immediate family. He was 65 years old. A wonderful son, brother, husband, father, colleague and friend, he will be forever remembered for his selfless spirit and as an inspiration to many.
A natural athlete, Steve excelled at any sport he tried. He played youth baseball, wrestled at Brooklyn College, water skied like a pro during summers at Camp Dunmore in Vermont and won many a pull-up contest for those who dared him.
A film major, Steve found his way to the TV business after graduation, first at ABC Networks and then on Long Island at Cablevision stations including AMC, Bravo and others. His greatest achievements, including 14 New York Emmy Awards, were garnered at SportsChannel and then at MSG Networks where he capped his career and forged lasting friendships.
Adding to his legacy is the 10 years he spent fiercely fundraising for the Empire State Ride (ESR) to End Cancer for Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY, a 500-plus mile bike ride that he would help its founder, Terry Bourgeios, grow into a major event. (He proudly, but humbly, cycled the full distance from Staten Island to Buffalo nine times.) Ironically, during his cancer battle, he received one of the treatments funded by cyclists’ research dollars. Six years ago he founded ESR Long Island, a regional event held in Oyster Bay. It has raised over $650,000 as of this June. Steve would want all of us to head there in June 2027, we hope to see you there.
