Herbert J. Friedman, a lifelong champion of education and community, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of love, learning, and service.

Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1934, Herbert was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Elaine for 54 years until her passing in 2010, and a cherished father to Beth Friedman (husband Todd Benjamin) and Evan Friedman (wife Faye Friedman). He was a proud grandfather to Rachel Friedman Packer (husband Reid Packer) and Joshua Benjamin. During the last ten years, Herbert also found immense joy and companionship with his significant other, Felice Hochberg.

Herbert’s commitment to education was evident throughout his life’s work. A graduate of Cortland State and Christopher Columbus High School, he dedicated over three decades of service to Hawthorne Cedar Knolls, where he served in many roles from teacher to Superintendent of Schools. As Superintendent, Herbert not only led Hawthorne Cedar Knolls but also served as the President of the Southern Westchester Council of School Superintendents, where his leadership and vision influenced educational policies and practices beyond his own district. Until his passing, he served as an active trustee on the school board at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls, further demonstrating his dedication to the school community.

He founded the Statewide Schools Cooperative Health Plan (SWSCHP) during his tenure as superintendent at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls and served as its Executive Director from 1996 to 2012, where he was honored with the title of Director Emeritus. Herbert’s dedication to improving educational resources earned him widespread respect and admiration.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Herbert had a passion for writing, classic movies (especially Casablanca), Rummikub, and the Yankees. He was deeply involved in charity fundraising efforts, reflecting his commitment to giving back to those in need. In his earlier years, Herbert generously provided Bar Mitzvah training and taught in a YMYW-HA Sunday school program, touching the lives of many with his wisdom and kindness.

In addition to his educational and philanthropic endeavors, Herbert has been a member of the Woodlands Community Temple Congregation for 55 years, where he served as the Financial Secretary and trustee. He also held the position of Board President of the Winchester Homeowners Association for 13 years, further demonstrating his dedication to community involvement and leadership.

Herbert will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to supporting, teaching, and caring for others. His impact on the lives of students, colleagues, and community members will be felt for generations to come.

He was predeceased by his wife Elaine and his identical twin brother Norman, who passed away in December 2023. Herbert’s memory will be forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
