OBITUARY:
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Amy Barbara Stivelman. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on August 26, 2024 at the age of 92. Amy was born in Brooklyn to Pearl (Uris) Sheindelman and Ephraim (Frank) Sheindelman.
Amy grew up in Merrick, New York and attended Mepham High School where she was the drum majorette. She briefly attended the University of Miami but cut her time there short to marry and move to the Netherlands. There she started her family and enjoyed many wonderful years living abroad. She returned to Long Island in 1958, raised her growing family and eventually returned to school where she earned a Masters degree in Social Work at Adelphi University. Amy enjoyed her clinical work but moved on to become a Professor of Sociology and Social Work at Molloy College where she taught until her retirement at age 75.
Other than spending time with family and friends, Amy loved traveling, theatre, music, football, gardening and pets. She was an avid reader and loved discussing current events. Animal causes were perhaps her favorite charity. She remained up to date and passionate about the world until her death.
Amy is survived by her children Michael (Sara), Andrew and Linda (Daniel). She was adored by her grandchildren David (Mandee), Hannah (Scott), Dylan and Tori. She was blessed to be able to meet and get to know her great grandson Eliot. In addition, Amy is survived by her loving and devoted sister Nina Linwood and several nieces. Amy was loved by her many friends of all ages and backgrounds which she easily made over the years.
Her warmth, intelligence, kindness, grace and compassion will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
