Burial at New Montefiore Cemetery following the Chapel Service
Edward Duke Goldberg, 87, of White Plains, New York, former Chancellor of Higher Education for the State of New Jersey, passed away on August 28, 2024. Born on May 30, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, to Julius “Bill” Goldberg and Anna Flamm Goldberg, Ed was a remarkable individual known for his courage, selflessness, intellect, and sense of humor.
In 1957, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, with a B.S. in Accounting. He continued his higher education at the Columbia University School of Business, obtaining an M.S. in Finance in 1959, and earned a Ph.D. in Economics and Management Theory from Columbia in 1969.
His illustrious career spanned several decades and roles, significantly impacting the field of higher education. He served as a professor, a dean, and ultimately the Chancellor of Higher Education for the State of New Jersey. Subsequently, he served as a Distinguished Scholar at Seton Hall University, President of eHigherEducation — an online course development company he founded — the Chief Learning Officer at Enforsys, and a consultant.
Ed was a voracious reader (from news to non-fiction and spy thrillers), a lover of Jewish life and the State of Israel, and a die-hard Jacksonville Jaguars fan. Later in life, he served as a life-coach to numerous members of the community. He also contributed his time and wisdom as a Board Member of Cherub Improv, a not-for-profit organization. He will be missed at GFA gatherings for his memorable inductions and recount of the family’s history.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Ann, sons David (Stacey), and Jonathan (Tara), and their families, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will miss his guidance and enduring love.
Memorial services are scheduled for Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 11:30am, at Gutterman’s Rockville Centre Chapel. Burial will follow at the New Montefiore Cemetery.
