George Bernstein passed away peacefully at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, devotion, and a life lived joyfully. He was the beloved son of Claire and Ted Bernstein, born in Manhattan before his family settled in Woodmere, Long Island, when he was six months old. George, or Moose as he was known, grew up in Woodmere and graduated from Lawrence High School, where he was a proud member of the Gems and a standout star on the basketball team. After college, George was drafted during the Korean War, serving honorably as a medic based in Lompoc, California.
It was in New York City that George met Harriet Newman, a young woman from Warren, Ohio, and the two began a love story that would span 73 wonderful years. They made their home in North Bellmore, where they raised their three children, Marcia, Robin, and Cliff. They had a lifelong love of travel, with trips to Italy, Scandinavia, and France, as well as many other places.
For many years, George built a respected career in the woolen industry, working as a salesman and sales agent. Outside of work, he found joy in coaching basketball and baseball. For more than fifty years, he was an active and beloved member of the Suburban Temple on Long Island, where he volunteered his time and resources to its annual bazaar.
Eight years ago, George and Harriet moved to Livingston, New Jersey, where they embraced a new chapter together, attending shows at the local theater and visiting family. Through it all, George remained devoted to his family above all else. He is remembered as the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren and great-grandfather of ten adorable kiddos. George will be forever remembered for his devotion to Harriet, the love he had for his entire family, and of course, his humor. He leaves behind a life lived well and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
