Howard Charles Chasnoff, 80, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away on July 5th after a battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Howard was born on September 20th 1943 to Jack and Esse Chasnoff in Brooklyn, NY. After Howard graduated from Music and Art High School in 1961, he went on to study chemistry at Brooklyn College where he earned a Bachelors in Science in 1964. He then went on to complete his masters degree.

After graduating, he started his first job at the New York City Board of Education as a chemistry teacher, kickstarting a thirty-four year career in education.

In 1964, Howard Chasnoff met Gloria Bedine when they were both counselors at Edelia sleepaway camp in upstate New York. Howard and Gloria married in 1967 and went on to have two children, Larry and Tara.Their love, devotion and companionship propelled them through fifty-six years of marriage.

In 1999, Howard retired and spent his time composing and performing music, hiking in the woods, swimming and providing love and support to his wife Gloria. After his children married their spouses and began families of their own, Howard was an active and loving grandfather to six grandchildren . In addition, he continued to nurture his lifelong friendships from work, his music community, temple and his Terra Alta extended family. He placed great importance on remaining close to his sister Judith, her children Tova and Eric and her husband Richard Staber.

Howard was predeceased by his parents Esse and Jack Chasnoff who he took care of as their health declined. He is survived by his wife Gloria, sister Judith, children Larry and Tara, daughter in-law Michelle Lieberman, son in-law David Mickenberg, his niece Tova and her daughter Sofie, nephew Eric and his children Stan and Nina, and his grandchildren Lila, Estie, Hannah, Jake, Veronica and Maggie.

Services will be held at Gutterman’s Funeral Home on July 8th at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, an organization Howard felt strongly about.
