Irwin Bernstein, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather partner, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026, surrounded by love. He was 92 years old.
Born on April 17, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, Irwin grew up in Sheepshead Bay, alongside his siblings Shirley, Alvin, and Stanley. Raised by his parents, Fanny and Max, he developed the exceptionally outgoing personality, warmth, and independence that would define his life and relationships.
Irwin was known for his larger-than-life presence, his humor, and his deep devotion to family. He shared 55 years of marriage with his cherished wife, Judy (Gerver) Bernstein, whom he met in 1953. Their beautiful love story was one of joy, partnership, and admiration. They married in 1955 while Irwin was stationed in Hawaii during his service in the United States Army, beginning a lifetime of shared adventure and devotion. Together they built their home in East Meadow, New York, where they lovingly raised their two daughters, Meryl Bernstein Feuer and Aimee Bernstein. They also resided in Manhattan and Boca Raton, FL.
After Judy’s passing, Irwin was fortunate to find love again with his devoted partner, Carol (Moser) Penn, with whom he shared more than 15 wonderful years filled with companionship, laughter, and deep affection. They resided in Great Neck, NY and Boca Raton, FL.
Irwin worked for more than four decades alongside his brother Alvin at Hudson Pipe Nipple Manufacturing Company, a family business they inherited from their father. Together, they formed a remarkable partnership, building a successful and enduring enterprise.
A natural athlete from an early age, Irwin excelled in basketball, handball, paddleball, and ping pong. Tennis, however, became his greatest passion. He played nearly every day well into his late 80s, winning countless tournaments and earning a reputation for his signature drop shot and lob. Competitive and determined, he relished the game and the camaraderie it brought.
Irwin’s vibrant personality extended far beyond the court. He loved dancing, telling a great story, and was known for his strong singing voice and his ability to light up any room. He made people feel comfortable, laugh easily, and enjoy life more fully in his presence.
Above all, Irwin was devoted to his family. He was the proud father of his daughters, Meryl and Aimee, a loving father-in-law to Jeff Kuhr and a good friend to Meryl’s fiancé Harvey Manes. He adored his grandchildren Harrison Feuer (Jess Liss), Mallory Feuer, Marshall Donner (Molly Ostrow), Elizabeth Kuhr (Emily Bunting), and Jack Kuhr (Rachel DiSalvo), and his new great grandson, Julian Kuhr. He took immense pride in each of them, celebrating their accomplishments and cherishing his unique relationship with each.
Irwin will be remembered as a man who loved his family deeply, gave generously of himself, and brought energy, humor, and warmth to everyone he encountered. His life was full, his love constant, and his impact lasting.
May his memory forever be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
