Joseph Baumoel (June 22, 1928 – June 21, 2025)Joseph “Joe” Baumoel passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Worth, Florida, on June 21, 2025, just one
day before his 97th birthday. He was surrounded by his wife Carolyn, his son Doug, and his trusted aide Jim.
Born in the Bronx, New York, on June 22, 1928, Joe grew up in a family of modest means. After losing his
father at a young age, he was raised by his mother Regina and his older siblings, David and Rose. Despite
financial hardship, the family prioritized Joe’s education, laying the groundwork for a life of invention,
achievement, and entrepreneurial success.
Joe earned both a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the City College of New
York (CCNY) in 1950. He married Florence (Flo) Baumoel, with whom he had three sons. In 1962, with a
young family to support, Joe left the security of working for others and founded his own company—
Controlotron. From the basement of his home, he developed his first product, a liquid level sensor, marking the
start of a pioneering career.
Under Joe’s leadership, Controlotron developed a range of innovative industrial and aerospace technologies. In
the 1970s, he launched a subsidiary, Sports Computer Corporation, creating the first specialized digital
computer for calculating golf handicaps. Never content to rest on his laurels, Joe and his team went on to
develop the first reliable and accurate clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter, which became the foundation of
Controlotron’s success for the next several decades. The company was ultimately sold in 2005.
Throughout his life, Joe remained an inventor at heart—developing products, founding companies, and securing
over 50 patents. His creativity and drive never waned, and he continued developing patents well into his 90’s
and worked on new ideas at his home electronics lab up to the final days of his life.
Joe is survived by his wife Carolyn, and his first wife Flo; his sons Mitch (Nancy), Doug (Victoria), and Ken
(Catharine); his stepdaughters Debbie Laykind (Marc) and Melissa Biangazzo (Rob); his grandchildren Lisa,
Emily, and William; his step-grandchildren Matthew, Michael, Robert and Johnny; his niece Marlene Maitland;
nephew Michael Yeni; and grand-niece and nephews Eric Maitland, Rafael Yeni, Ariel Yeni, and Miriam Yeni.
He was predeceased by his parents Max and Regina (Hefter) Baumoel, his siblings David Baumoel and Rose
Yeni, and his nephew Paul Baumoel.
Joe was honored with numerous awards, including Entrepreneur of the Year, and was admired for his
contributions to science, engineering, and industry. He traveled the world, and had a deep love for opera,
mathematics, and science.
Joe Baumoel was a true force of nature—a relentless innovator whose work touched countless lives. May he
rest in peace, knowing how deeply he is loved and how enduring his legacy will be.
Joe credited the education he received at CCNY for much of his success. In lieu of flowers, he would like to be
remembered through donations to the engineering department at CCNY.
