Notes:
Judith Linda Brown was born 85 years ago on
March 16 ,1940, and passed away this past Saturday,
September 27, 2025, after a long and courageous battle
with heart failure and other conditions.
Judy Brown was an incredible human being – warm and loving, guileless, sassy, selfless, and stubborn as Hell. Whether meeting her for the first time, or after many years of friendship, those who knew her were especially taken with her generosity of concern – she was always there to
listen, and always ready to help in any way she could.
Her love of flowing water was particularly notable. Thankfully for the last 20 years she was able to enjoy an unparalleled view of Woodland Pond through her living room window, taking special delight in the spouting central fountain, painted turtles, croaking bullfrogs and, perhaps most spectacularly, the constant whoosh of coming and going flocks of Mallards and Canada Geese – the perfect accompaniment to her morning coffee and toasted everything bagel, topped with a modest and doctor-approved schmear of scallion cream cheese.
Despite difficult and often painful symptoms, Judy remained bright, cheery and uncomplaining, not only to family and friends but also to doctors and medical staff, who would ask her, several times a day –“Judy! How are you feeling?” – and to which she would invariably reply (even on the day before she passed) – “I feel really good. I do.”
Among the pleasures Judy enjoyed with friends were her Thursday afternoon canasta games, and her weekly book club. She was also a fanatically devoted Yankees fan and hardly ever missed a game. But she was just as fanatically devoted to keeping her mind lively and open, and therefore acquired and read more books per week than any three people I know.
But most of all, Judy was fanatical about Family. She adored her daughter-in-law Sunday as well as her grandchildren Nathaniel and Elliana and had the gift of them living with her for several years. She loved and admired her two brothers, Larry and Steve, and would have walked through fire for her three children – Avra, Jonathan, and Micah – and her beloved niece Elizabeth.
Judy’s sister-in-law Linda was a dear friend and an amazing support these last months, spending hours with her talking about their shared history, exchanging funny stories to buoy her spirits when she was low, and bringing cheerful bouquets of sunflowers to brighten whichever room, unit or wing of the hospital Judy might have been moved to after a treatment or procedure. Her sister-in-law Karen was also a dear friend and a formidable ally in facilitating Judy’s access to the best and most knowledgeable medical oversight.
Judy’s cheerfulness, her welcoming spirit, her talent for making everyone feel not only comfortable but important, transformed her home into a kind of unofficial family center, where her geographically spread out (and intellectually opinionated) family could come together, relax, call a truce, and celebrate birthdays, religious holidays, and special occasions with good food, good spirits, and good feelings. She was dearly loved, will be dearly missed, and will never be forgotten.
