Judy Coopersmith (January 29, 1933 – October 7, 2022)
Judy Coopersmith, age 89, of Rockville Centre, NY passed away peacefully on October 7, 2022 from a long-term illness. She was born on January 29, 1933 in Buffalo, NY. A life-long lover of ballet, Judy was a locally renowned ballet teacher at the Rockville Centre Dance Academy and Adelphi University. Judy was a distinguished labanotation expert (the written language of choreography), nationally recognized for introducing labanotation into the United States. In addition to her dance career, she was a local activist who advocated for the community throughout her 62 years in Rockville Centre.
Judy is survived by her loving husband, Jerome Coopersmith, to whom she was married for 65 years. She is also survived by her two daughters, Amy Coopersmith Lauria (Ken) and Jill Andrea Lambert (Robert), her grandchildren Kyle Cheney (Hannah) and Kim Nicholetti (Shane), her step-grandchildren Stephanie Lauria, Kevin Lauria, Michelle Franzen (Danny), and Daniel Lambert, two great grandchildren, Clara Josephine Cheney and Beatrice Dorothy Cheney, her niece, Gretchen Garrett (Jeff), and many life-long friends.
A memorial service will be held at Gutterman’s Funeral Home on October 9, 2022 at 3:00pm eastern. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the American Heart Association.
