Lewis Azrael Siegel, 91, passed away surrounded by his loving family on September 5, 2025 in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.
Lew was born in Bronx, New York, on July 31, 1934, and he grew up in New Jersey and Florida. After graduating high school, he enrolled at Rutgers University and joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as both an officer and reservist, primarily at Fort Benning in Georgia.
At the start of college in 1952, Lew met the love of his life, Hannah, at Rutgers University’s Hillel House, and they were married upon graduation in 1956. A desire to care and provide for his family was at the center of the life that Lew built. Together, he and Hannah had four children.
Lew went on to become an actuary, eventually opening the firm Siegel Benefit Consultants. As he advanced in his career, he also consulted on tax codes for the Internal Revenue Service.
Lew’s Jewish faith and heritage were focal points of his life. He was an active member of Pinebrook Jewish Center in Pinebrook, NJ, and Temple Beth Kodesh in Boynton Beach, Florida. He and Hannah hosted the Jewish holidays and countless celebrations for decades, opening their home to all who wanted to celebrate or learn the Jewish traditions.
Integrity and loyalty were hallmarks of Lew’s life. He was committed to doing the right thing and often teased by his wife for rule following. He sought to embody the Jewish principle of tzedek, or righteousness and abiding by the law. Lew was also an early adopter of recycling, embracing and prioritizing conservation before it was mainstream.
While Lew was more of a homebody, his love and devotion to his family, particularly his wife, propelled him to join her on many international adventures. They visited places such as China, Cuba, and Israel. Lew was an avid tennis player and fitness enthusiast, riding his bike until he was 89 and doing push-ups into his 90s.
Above all, Lew’s greatest legacy was his care for his family. He sought to create the stable environment that he craved as a child, and he was an ardent supporter and champion of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Marc and Elaine Siegel, Ralph and Maria Siegel, Julie and Paul Brodsky, and Bruce and Nicole Siegel; grandchildren Stephanie Siegel, Nikki Outlaw (husband Brad), Rachel Siegel, Samantha Falcone (husband Chris), and Natasha Brodsky; great-grandchildren Chavah and Ezri Outlaw; and sister Marilyn Epstein.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his bride, Hannah Siegel; and his beloved grandson, Benjamin Siegel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
