Notes:

If you ever needed a belly laugh, an ear to listen, or a story to keep you occupied, Martin “Marty” Waitz was the man to call. He died on March 1st as he lived, surrounded by people who loved him. He was 81.

Marty was born in Brooklyn, February 10, 1942, and was raised in Kew Garden Hills. While he played stickball and stoopball, his parents Frances and George Waitz (predeceased), ran George’s Luggage. Marty served his entire career at the accounting firm of Margolin Winer and Evans, where he was a partner and where he formed lifelong friends.  Family meant everything to Marty, and he was the heart of every gathering. A wine aficionado, Marty penned wine poems for the people he loved. His rendition of “Go Down Moses” was second to none, and his “Montauk Monster” story will live on forever. He is survived by Basia Waitz, the light of his life and his wife of 38 years; his three children, Lorraine Waitz Gropper, Ken Waitz (Jessica Henry), and Alison Wallace (Danny Wallace); six adoring grandchildren, Molly and Ben Wallace, Jack and Max Waitz, and Will and Clay Gropper, his sister, Janice Millman, his nieces and nephews, and scores of people who claimed him as their own. Marty turned even the most mundane into an adventure, making a trip to the bagel store as exciting as his world travels on safari in South Africa or the Great Wall in China. Although the NY Giants reigned supreme in his heart, Marty never met a sport he didn’t like to watch. He loved to golf and claimed repeat victories at the family George cup; his Luchen Cup Trip with dear friends was an annual highlight.

Services will be held at Gutterman’s Funeral Home in Woodbury NY on March 5, 2023 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Marty for prostate cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering.
