Notes:

Morton Künstler, 97, of Oyster Bay, New York died on February 2, 2025. He was born in Brooklyn to Rebecca and Thomas Künstler and is survived by his wife of 73 years, Deborah (nee Goldberg); his children David, Amy, Jane (Cliff Broffman), and Thomas Künstler; and grandchildren Andrew and Laura Broffman.

Künstler was an artist known for his work chronicling important events in American history and popular culture. His early career was as an illustrator for magazines, books, advertisements and movie posters. Later he shifted to historical events, focusing on the Civil War. Through his masterful painting and meticulous research, he earned recognition from historians and collectors as the foremost painter of American History.

His painting Washington’s Crossing was unveiled at the New-York Historical Society to critical acclaim for its historical accuracy. He has had 15 one-man shows at Hammer Galleries and dozens of exhibits in museums across the country, including the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Künstler’s artistic talent was matched by his athletic prowess. He was Brooklyn College’s first 4-letter man, went to UCLA on a basketball scholarship, and was accepted to Pratt Art Institute for basketball.

He was a devoted husband and father, and loved his life. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many fans.
