Ronald Mark Berman
June 19, 1940 – February 9, 2023
Ronald Mark Berman, 82, of New York City, passed away on February 9, 2023, following a brief illness.
Born in Brooklyn on June 19, 1940 to Dr. Benjamin and Mildred (Shebar) Berman, the family settled in Freeport, Long Island once his father was discharged from military service at the end of World War II. Ron graduated from Freeport High School in 1958, from Colgate University in 1962, and Albany Law School in 1965.
Ron was hired as an in-house attorney for the New York Stock Exchange, and then worked briefly for a small law firm on Long Island. But the lure of the markets frew Ron’s attention away from practicing law. In 1967 he joined the firm Phillips, Appel & Walden, a regional broker dealer, for 10 years. He then moved on to Bear Stearns & Co. where he spent 25 years, rising to the rank of Managing Director, specializing in options trading. In 2003, he left Bear Stearns for Axion Securities where he worked the next 11 years. Ron was passionate about his work and the strategic maneuvering it entailed. He continued to actively manage his own portfolio and offer advice to friends and family until recently.
In 1968, Ron married the former Sharon Kadish and settled in Allendale, NJ in 1979 where his two sons were raised. After they divorced, Ron met Eunice Reich whom he wed in 1992. A high profile, fixed-income analyst who was a Managing Director at J. P. Morgan Securities, Eunice broadened Ron’s horizons beyond Wall Street and together they set up home in a midtown apartment with breathtaking views. Following her death in 2000, Ron honored Eunice by establishing The Eunice Foundation, which created a school within Memorial Sloan Kettering Cander Center for pediatric patients. Ron and Eunice were longtime members of Barnert Temple in Franklin Lakes, NJ.
Ron was predeceased by his younger sister, Nancy Karyo. Survivors include his companion of the last 20 years, Elizabeth McCormack; his sons Daniel of Mahwah, NJ and Craig (Myranda) of Las Vegas, NV; stepchildren Theodore Reich (Roseanne Hampton) of Seattle, WA and Erica Reich Linares (Jorge Linares) of Ringwood, NJ, and four grandchildren: Penelope and Sedona Berman, and Eydan and Julian Linares. Also, a niece and nephew, Ghislaine and Gui Karyo.
The funeral will be held Sunday, February 12 at 10:00 AM at Gutterman’s Funeral Home in Rockville Centre, NY. Please contact Gutterman’s directly for further details at 516-764-9400. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Ron’s memory to Barnert Temple (Franklin Lakes, NJ) or Congregation Sons of Israel (Manalapan, NJ).
