Sharon Brecher was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 10, 1947, to Abraham and June Plotnick. She loved her father Abraham but had a truly special bond with her mother June. Sharon’s brother Alan sadly predeceased her last year. Sharon graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in education and became a passionate educator with the NYC Department of Education for more than 30 years. For most of those years Sharon taught 4th grade at P.S.56 in Richmond Hill, Queens and developed close connections with her colleagues and the community. Mrs. Brecher never had a “bad student” and touched the lives of so many students and families.
Sharon was small & mighty and loved her city of New York. She was a regular on the E & F subway lines traveling into the City from Queens to see Broadway shows, stay on top of the latest fashion trends and to try new restaurants; she loved ethnic cuisine, especially anything Asian. Sharon and Kenny, her husband of 53 years, traveled the world together, spending eight weeks touring Europe on a tight budget in the early 1970s and more recently on trips to Israel, an African safari and just last year on an epic adventure to Alaska. Sharon and Kenny also had many magical summers working together at sleepaway camps in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and she often would say “there’s nothing in the world like camp”.
Sharon is survived by her husband (and personal chef) Kenny and her beloved children Rachel & Seth and their spouses Jeremy & Sasha whom she loved like her own. Sharon’s pride and joy were her six grandchildren Lyla (15), Talia (11), Eli (11), Elon (10), Ari (8) and Leo (4) whom she decked out in the best clothing; often customized with their favorite teams and always the trendiest brands. Sharon will be deeply missed for her energy, spunk and for sending the most thoughtful, funny and original handpicked cards to the people she loved most.
Sharon’s funeral service will be held at Gutterman’s in Rockville Center on August 15, 2024 at 11:30am (visitation at 10:30am) followed immediately by her burial at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon.
Please make donations in Sharon’s memory to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp www.holeinthewallgang.org, a summer sleepaway camp that brings fun & friendship to seriously ill children & their families.
